We have created this website for 1st grade elementary educators to access to aid them when teaching about adaptation. This is part of our lab’s educational outreach that incorporates various fun activities for your students. We used bats as a model for teaching adaptation because of their diversity and unique adaptations. The goal of the three activities is to combine active learning and physical movement to increase understanding of the concept of adaptation and to promote appreciation and conservation of bats. The activities build on each other and can be incorporated into current curriculum. Please contact us with any questions.
Each activity includes a lesson plan, printable materials, and a PowerPoint. Activity 1: Bat Physical Features Activity 2: Bat Diets Activity 3: Bat Masks Our song, Under the Stars at Midnight, incorporates lyrics to the tune of Deep in the Heart of Texas and hand motions to reinforce what students learn about bat physical features, diets, and adaptations in the three activities. We suggest teaching the song to students and singing it after each activity. The .WAV file can be burned to a CD and easily played in your classroom.
