Research Project I investigate the song repertoire and behavioral significance of singing in the heart-nosed bat, Cardioderma cor, in Tanzania. Although singing is likely a common behavior of many bat species, studies of song divergence and singing behavior is largely lacking, particularly in foraging contexts. This work on C. cor has involved a combination of VHF telemetry to track singers while foraging, acoustic recording and analysis with MATLAB, and field experiments involving acoustic playbacks to test hypotheses regarding the usage of song and song variability.
